here and now
Second post of the year, this is progress in mine own eyes. I thought id be hittng this blog everyday and saying whats happening but such is life, things never go as planned, therefore improvisation is the only way to go…my friends father told him that….’always be prepared to improvise’, i think that is sound advice and put into practice, trust me it works. so here and now what am i doing….actually quite a bit……….
(a) trying to get KIBOKO84.COM© up and running. wish i had a personal organiser who had a personal organiser who had a personal organiser kind of thing, so much to do. I am constantly channelling out work, filling sketchbooks, painting and printing(tees) therefore trying to filter all the material that i have so only the most relevant stuff can go on the website is proving a difficult process which, if not followed up will take forever.less is more indeed, how to apply that to my work is another story.plus….. a few people have been asking for some of the designs as actual prints which they can hang up on their walls, an avenue i am seriously considering, so check the website out and youll find some prints up eventually which you can buy and take home and be happy with.in short, website will be looking plump around april, right now its a bit malnourished.Hidden extras….going to do a mini sticker campaign and paste my stuff around and give em away when one buys kiboko84© merchandise, so keep your eyes peeled, im about to embark on a self promotion spree
(b)i used to hate graphic design, especially typography.i did a joint degree in graphic design and illustration, did well in illustration, graphics game me grief so i dropped the course, moved schools, focusing on pure illustration now. lo and behold, guess who has caught up with me in the end, graphic design.its funny, most of the things i end up running away from, i end up having to face again.when i started kiboko84© i became responsible for the whole look and feel of the label (still a work in progress, the label is young only 1 and half years old), so i had to find ways of signing my stuff and creating interesting labels that fitted my artwork.went to a talk by illustrator JAKE the other day, and he was speaking of how you do some crazy illustration and then its passed on to the graphics dude who (unless he/she is familiar with your style) will add some text and make the whole thing look like crap.so i learnt to do my own graphics then add my own type, my way, finding and breaking the rules as i went along, balancing image and type and eventually found using type isnt such a b)£(£d after all…was told once to see type as an image, i did or rather i do now so im quite happy to play around with text. The whole point of this is, thus far, i have been approached to design 3 logos, independent stuff, nothing big, but for me, its the lil things that count and the results so far have been encouraging, or rather i have made the client smile. All of them are still works in progress again.. The joys of getting commissioned are you do one thing and you are like thats the one and the client goes like hmmm, or you do 5 different takes on an idea and the client likes them all and are more confused than they were in the beginning before they commissioned you? get it?dont worry if you dont, still adjusting to the whole way that this things work. So graphics has found me, i have found graphics, more logos on the way, mo remixes of the kiboko logo, and as soon as i get the time, ill post some images up.
(c) another thing i have been trying to avoid for a while is printing tees for other people, that caught up with me too.benefits of designing and printing is that you get full creative control, downfalls, when there are deadlines to meet and you are printing flat out for days, your body will need a nice decent break, and it wont get it till the work is done…..at times id give up the creative control and just send the graphic elsewhere. a few of them printing sessions are heading my way…that plus have to do my summer range….let me be busy….an idle mind is the devils workshop
(d) collabo.me and my boy aruta from japan are starting a few projects and will bring out some work soon.this boy is twisted maaaaaaaaan, hes work by definition is outta space….trying to make a crew so we can drop into SECRET WARS (if they are bold enough to give us the stage) and do a few freestyle battle…(secret wars is like a hip/hop battle or breakdance battle, substitute for a mic is a black marker, substitute for the beat is a white wall). If and when that happens, pix will be up or on my website
(e) last but not least courseworks…have a group project to get the worlds attention…or rather capture your audiences imagination……………..pain in the “”£$ but slowly coming along, and have to make a toy for an exhibition….the making it is not the problem, that has been done, illustrating the instructions for making it has made me develop a new respect for anyone and i repeat anyone who has ever had to illustrate a ‘how to make’ anything manual,.
so thats what is happening here and now, it is not meant to be a complaint or a moan, but a statement that i am only one man….and if i had a few copies of me, banzai baby, happy days, but alas i am only one man.progress in a few areas is painfully slow, but there is progress…bear with me.slow but sure wins the race hehe and if ther are any typos, my apologies.plus look out for HI-FIDEL & T on myspace.these kids are goin to be big, doing some work for them as well.
